In a world where breed defines class, Anne Fuchs, a prim and proper English Fox, defies the ways of early 1900's Virginia by teaching Harold Tige, an overworked pit bull servant, how to read. Her brother-in-law, a cruel tobacco baron, fights to maintain the status quo and keep his best pit fighter helpless to improve his standing.
