For Equality and Dignity: Scene 1

Written by Lazy Ray Finkle

Anne and Tige are seated around a table, both holding the same book. Anne has been coaching Tige on diction and line comprehension. Tige wears a mask that indicates his servitude and covers his scars from pit fighting for Anne's brother-in-law.
TIGE:
ANNE:
TIGE: Was that better, Ms. Fuchs?
ANNE: It was Mr. Tige, but I would like to try something different this time if that is all right with you.
TIGE: What's that?
ANNE: I would like for you to read the passage again, but I would like to hear you speak without your mask on.
TIGE: [PAUSE] I'll only frighten you.
ANNE: You won't frighten me, and I bet there's a wonderful voice under that mask.
SFX: [REMOVE MASK]
TIGE: [READING] I would hate the men of this world for their apathy and arrogance. I would hate them for their disregard and disrespect for their fellow man, but if I can look upon them not in judgment, then they will not have the right to judge me.
ANNE: You have a lovely voice and I believe the whole world would love to hear you speak.
TIGE: [PAUSE] [TREMBLING] I'm sorry. I've never had a lady tell me that.
ANNE: And I won't be the only one. I promise you.
