The Jackal and the Ostrich: Scene 4

Written by Carrizo

Jackal has been in August's custody for a week, where the canine has refused to give any information on Ostrich's whereabouts. Things get worse when bad intel botches an operation leaving Cherry captured by the elusive Ostrich. With Len at the boiling point, desperate to rescue his hawk partner, he's been fighting the cool desk agent August for access at jackal, determined to get information out of him, not realizing August had been gathering valuable intel all this time.
LEN: Special operations field agent, early 30s. Quick to anger, passionate about his missions. Would do anything for his team. Israeli, could have a soft accent.
AUGUST: High ranked operative, though has always worked at a desk. Late 40s, educated, seasoned agent, crisp and focused especially under duress. Controlled in his behavior and language. Canadian.
LEN: [FLIPPING TABLE] AAAUGH!
AUGUST: That looks helpful.
LEN: Don’t start with me, August. Don’t start with me. God, I can’t even look at you right now.
AUGUST: Calm down, Len. Anger isn’t going to rescue Cherry. Finding Ostrich will.
LEN: Then get it out of Jackal. Grab a towel and a bucket, soak it out of that sand-caked mongrel.
AUGUST: He won’t bark when Ostrich’s location is the only thing keeping him here.
LEN: He’ll bark when I’m clipping off his dewclaws.
AUGUST: [FIRMLY] Len, stop focusing on Jackal.
LEN: Don't talk to me about my focus, goose. Don’t forget which one of us does the chasing.
AUGUST: I know. And you’ve been chasing the wrong thing.
SFX: [BOOK LANDS HEAVILY ON TABLE]
LEN: What’s this?
AUGUST: The Bible. Read it.
LEN: Not really in the mood.
AUGUST: Just that passage.
LEN: [READING] “They shall call its nobles to proclaim the kingdom, but all its princes shall be no more. And thorns will grow in its palaces, and it shall be a habitation for jackals, an abode for ostriches.”
AUGUST: That phrase appears five times in the Testament. Never in the Christian Bible, never in the Quran.
LEN: What does it mean?
AUGUST: It means we’ve been looking the wrong direction all this time.
LEN: Jackal’s Sunni. We established that.
AUGUST: But Ostrich isn’t. We thought they had a religious agenda, but it was never about that.
LEN: Then what is it about?
AUGUST: The thing this passage calls for. Anarchy.
